Revolutionary War Soldiers Wooden Stave Barrel Style Canteen

Product Description

This excellent quality, original Military Style Wooden Water Canteen measures about 11” wide and the ends have a diameter of 5”. Revolutionary War Era Army and/or Militia Soldiers would be required to bring a portable water canteen when reporting for duty (see period sketch, ca. 1774). This example has a raised wooden bung which was carved out of the top stave; an old cork remains, but it may not be original.

The wooden staves are held together with four original hand-forged metal bands and are all tight and intact. Attached to the two top metal bands is an iron bail handle. I've read that in the later part of the war, colonists and militia were using these as small powder kegs to store fine grade powder for pistols and muskets. (The kegs produced specifically for black powder had copper bands, less chance of a spark occurring).

This canteen is in great condition for its age, only the typical signs of use. It appears that years ago a light coat of varnish was applied for preservation. I discuss these early canteens in my latest book “The Civil War Canteen – Third Edition.
