Revolutionary War soldier-carved “Buzzer”, dug at Ft. Ticonderoga by Frank Kravic (SOLD,MH)

Product Description

This is another interesting piece being offered; it is a Revolutionary War soldier-carved lead disc, made from melted bullets to make a ‘buzzer”, having a diameter of 2 1/4”.  Buzzers are button-like whirligigs that make a sound which can be modulated by how quickly it is spinning and by the tightness of the string.

The object is whirled by alternately pulling and releasing the tension on the cord. The whirling object makes a buzzing or humming sound, giving the device its common name. This piece was recovered by historian and author Frank Kravic at the ruins of Fort Ticonderoga many years ago.

These types of carvings were popular with soldiers for centuries; it was a favorite pastime to take their minds off of the fighting. There are examples in “Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution”, by Neumann & Kravic (see pictures).  The case has Frank’s signature tag with red lines stating, “Revolutionary War American unfinished buzzer dug – Ft. Ticonderoga, N.Y. by Frank Kravic”. It comes in the glass top display case pictured.

Revolutionary War artifacts have always been difficult to find. With the upcoming of the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding next year, there will be a revitalized interest. Just about all Revolutionary War relics and artifacts will be in demand, which will only add to their scarcity and price. I am already seeing a substantial increase in sales.
