This is another interesting piece being offered, it is a Revolutionary War Shot Bag. It is made of leather with a removable wooden cap and measures 5 ½” x 2” wide. These bags were worn on the powder horn strap of the light infantryman, both American and British. They were used to carry large shot which was loaded with the ball (“buck and ball”) to increase the effectiveness of the load.
An example of a similar shot bag is in NPS Revolutionary War Guilford Courthouse Museum (see pictures). Also, in “Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution” (see pictures). This bag came from the collection of Karl Z. Smith, author of “Getting’ The Lead Out” (see pictures). This shot bag is in beautiful condition and very special coming from Karl’s fabulous collection.
