Revolutionary War “Buzzer”, made from melted lead (SOLD)

Out of Stock

$75.00

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a large soldier-carved lead disc, made from melted bullets. It has a diameter of 1 ½” and there are two small holes punched in the middle. The soldier was creating a “buzzer”, which was a button-like whirligig that makes a sound which can be modulated by how quickly it is spinning and by the tightness of the string. The object is whirled by alternately pulling and releasing the tension on the cord. The whirling object makes a buzzing or humming sound, giving the device its common name. This piece was recovered in upstate New York in the Hudson Valley area, the site of many Revolutionary War campsites.

This piece was probably dropped by a soldier. Making these buzzers have always been a favorite pastime of soldiers, going back to the Revolutionary War (see pictures). They are also a common find at many Civil War sites. In my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I show and discuss the soldiers favorite pastime – carving (see pictures).
