Rare Confederate Virginia Button by “Young Smith & Co. New York

Product Description

This is another nice non-dug Confederate Virginia button being offered. The face has the Virginia symbolism of Virtus slaying the tyrant. It is a coat size, two-part button, measuring 21.5mm. It appears to have remants of the silver wash. This is one of the several Virginia buttons I am offering from the large collection I am working on.

The back mark has the standup shank and “YOUNG. SMITH & CO NEW . YORK”. It is believed that these buttons were produced by the Scovill Company, circa 1830-s – 1840s. This button was examined by one of the leading authorities on Civil War buttons and agreed it is one of the rarer Virginia buttons. He also feels it should be priced much higher than what I have it listed for here. It is in beautiful condition and comes in the glass top display case pictured.
