Rare - Confederate Sword dug at Chancellorsville

Product Description

This is another great piece which was part of a sword collection I acquired. It is an excavated Confederate sword that has many attributes associated with a “Dog River” sword. The overall length is 35 1/2". The slightly curved blade is 30” long with the characteristic unstopped fuller, which is typical of Confederate manufacture.

It has an unusual brass guard where it starts out as a solid piece of brass coming off the pommel and then splits into two branches. This is an area where it appears the sword was struck. It has a "high-hat" pommel cap that is made of brass. The brass has casting flaws typical of Confederate manufacture, and even some file marks still visible.

As the paper tag indicates, this sword was an early battlefield pick-up from the Chancellorsville, Virginia Battlefield. The blade with its uneven crude fuller is in very nice condition, no rust or flaking. There is only some very slight movement where the blade enters the guard. Dug Civil War swords and sabers are rare, finding a Confederate example is almost impossible.
