Rare Confederate Staff Officer’s button, came through blockade

Product Description

This is another nice button being offered; it is a rare non-dug Confederate Staff Officer’s button. It is coat-size 24mm and the eagle is facing right surrounded by 11 stars on a plain field with border. It was manufactured in England and smuggled through the blockade. The backmark is "H T & B / (star) MANCHESTER (star)" dm on a very flat back, outer ring of dots. These flat backs tended to loosen and rotate, but this one is still tight with a standup shank. Reference: Albert CS4A, Tice CS204A1.

These high-quality, well manufactured buttons were gold-washed and this one retains a beautiful untouched patina. A quality Confederate button such as this would be exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, to upgrade. Cowan’s Auction House recently had one listed estimated at $2,000 - $2,500 and sold for $1293.00 and it was in poor condition with very little gilt (email me if you would like to see a picture). Another well-known button dealer has a similar example available for $2250.00. The one offered here is much nicer than the other two, and less expensive.
