Product Description

This is another nice early piece coming out of a 60-year collection of French & Indian War/Revolutionary War artifacts. Being offered is a Revolutionary War pair of iron stirrups. They each measure 5 ½” x 4 ¾” x 2 ½”. This unique pair was recovered in the early 20th century in King’s Mountain, NC.

The Battle of Kings Mountain was a military engagement between Patriot and Loyalist militias in South Carolina during the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War, resulting in a decisive victory for the Patriots. The battle took place on October 7, 1780, 8 miles south of the present-day town of Kings Mountain, North Carolina.

In what is now rural Cherokee County, South Carolina, the Patriot militia defeated the Loyalist militia commanded by British Major Patrick Ferguson (see pictures). The battle has been described as "the war's largest all-American fight".

The British effort to secure Loyalist support in the South was a failure. Thomas Jefferson called the battle "The turn of the tide of success”. Patriot militiamen had the upper hand on the retreating Loyalist army and even killed their leader, British Major Patrick Ferguson. There were 90 American casualties and 1,018 British casualties.

These stirrups remain in very nice condition, having a mostly smooth surface, typical of an early recovery. This collection began in the late 1950s and was created by private acquisitions, closed museums, and from lake divers. The collector meticulously displayed and cataloged every piece along with its provenance. Many of the pieces went through electrolysis to remove the crusted rust.

This is the first time these items have been on the open market, and are truly great pieces of early American History. They definitely merit a place in an advanced collection or museum. As with all the pieces in this esteemed collection, a Certificate of Authenticity will be included.
