Being offered is a well-preserved, Civil War Federal accoutrement, it is an original pair of cartridge box tins used in the various models of leather cartridge boxes to hold the paper cartridges for the Union infantryman (see pictures). The two metal tins retain much of their original bright tin finish.
Each tin has one lower division open to the front and able to contain one bundle of ten .58 caliber paper cartridges and two upper divisions, one that holds six cartridges and the other four cartridges. Edges of each tin are turned over and soldered down to prevent accidental tearing open of the paper cartridges. There is some slight surface rust, but they are in solid condition and still usable. They are often found in dug condition because some soldiers felt no need to use them.
