This is a nice pair of bullets being offered, they are .58 caliber 6-point swage bullets as can be seen in the marks in the cavity. They were the type that were pressed and turned by machine. These dropped bullets were recovered years ago from the Antietam Battlefield.
Confederate General Robert E. Lee invaded Maryland in the late summer of 1862 and was intercepted by Union General George B. McClellan. Their armies met in the Battle of Antietam (or Battle of Sharpsburg) on September 17, 1862. This would become the single bloodiest day of the Civil War and all of American military history, seeing nearly 23,000 casualties.
These bullets were recovered by a relic hunter who constantly dug Antietam for many years. Not too many Antietam relics turn up anymore because the National Park Service has acquired many of the properties, so this is a great opportunity to add some pieces from a very important battle. They come in the glass top display case pictured.
