Original Revolutionary War Powder Horn

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Revolutionary War Powder Horn. It measures approximately 14” x 3”. During the American Revolutionary War, the powder horn was essential equipment for any soldier who used a firearm. The rifleman carried his firelock, hunting pouch, and a horn to carry the gunpowder.

Powder horns were generally created from cow, ox, or buffalo horn. As you can see in the pictures, this horn was well used. It has a carved wooden cap which is attached to a thin piece of thin leather. It is broken at one point and the rest of the leather is a little fragile. However, you rarely see these horns with their original slings.

There are similar examples of this horn in “Collectors Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution” (see pictures).
