Original Revolutionary War Powder Horn with cord

$225.00

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Revolutionary War Powder Horn. It measures approximately 8 1/2” x 2” and has a thin leather cord attached. During the American Revolutionary War, the powder horn was essential equipment for any soldier who used a firearm. The rifleman carried his firelock, hunting pouch, and a horn to carry the gunpowder.

Powder horns were generally created from cow, ox, or buffalo horn. To close off the open end, there are metal tacks to hold the flat wooden closure.

This powder horn shows honest use but remains in very nice condition – there are no cracks in the horn, which is seen quite often. This one still has the hand-carved wooden stopper in place. There are similar examples of this horn in “Collectors Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution” (see pictures).

Revolutionary War artifacts have always been difficult to find, and I am fortunate to have quite a few pieces in stock. With the upcoming of the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding next year, there will be a revitalized interest. Just about all Revolutionary War relics and artifacts will be in demand, which will only add to their scarcity and price. I am already seeing a substantial increase in purchases.
