Original Revolutionary War iron “Ice Creeper”, as in museums and books

$95.00

Product Description

Being offered is an original Revolutionary War soldier’s ice creeper, circa 1740 – 1790. It is hand-made of iron and measures 4” x 1 3/4”. Soldiers used ice creepers for walking in the ice & snow, especially during the winter camps. In the Revolutionary War Museum in Yorktown, VA there are examples of these ice creepers (see pictures).

In the “Collectors Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution”, by Neumann and Kravic, are several of these ice creepers. He states, “Because of the rough country in America, waterways were a much-used means of travel” (see pictures). The one being offered here was recovered in New England, which is known for their treacherous winters. This one is in very nice condition for its age, only some minor surface rust.
