ORIGINAL REVOLUTIONARY WAR HORN CUP, AS IN MUSEUMS

$95.00

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Revolutionary War Horn Cup. It measures 4” high with a diameter of 2 ½” on the top and 1 5/8” on the bottom (top slightly oblong). In the 18th and 19th centuries, cattle provided an abundant supply of horns, which were light, strong, and waterproof. After the inner material was boiled out, they were scraped and even separated into layers for use.

This is the type that a soldier would have carried in his pouch or would have been used in any tavern in America. There are examples of this cup in Guilford Courthouse American Revolutionary War Museum and the American Freedom Museum in Texas (see pictures).

Many of these horn cups develop cracks with age, however this one is void of any damage and has very nice coloring. In Early American Antiques, 1650 – 1800, by George Neumann, there are several examples shown (see pictures). This is a great Revolutionary War cup.
