Original pair of Civil War Crutches, as in books (SOLD,M)

Product Description

Being offered is a great original pair of Civil War crutches. Each crutch has a lengthy, tapered wood body, standing approximately 54”. They have a crescent-shaped head for the armpit approximately 8” wide. They have pressed batting for comfort and covered by the typical 19th century blue and white ticking. As seen in the pictures, they are well worn.

The Civil War saw some of the bloodiest conflicts ever fought on American soil, and injuries on the battlefield were as frequent as they were gruesome. Crutches like these aided the mobility of men who had suffered injuries to their feet, legs, or lower bodies.

These crutches are the typical size and style used throughout the Civil War. In my book “Battle of Gettysburg -The Relics, Artifacts & Souvenirs”, I show a rare pair of United States Christian Commission crutches that are marked “USCC” – they are the same style as these crutches (see pictures). Also, there are similar crutches at a Civil War Hospital and a pair of crutches next to the famous John Burns of Gettysburg fame (see pictures). These crutches were well used and a perfect example of what Civil War soldiers used.
