Original Federal Eagle “I”, silver-washed button, dug at Ft. Fisher, NC

Product Description

This is another great piece being offered, it is a Federal Eagle I, Silver-washed button. It is pre-war, circa 1840s – 1850s and measures 19mm. On the reverse, the shank still remains and there is a backmark, but difficult to make out. It was recovered years ago at Fort Fisher, NC.

These buttons were pretty much obsolete when the Civil War started, so it is a possibility that a young Confederate soldier got it off his father or family member for his coat when he went off to war. The button is in nice condition and the traces of silver are still obvious on the face of the button. Whatever the circumstance, there is no doubt that a Civil War soldier wore this while fighting took place at and around Fort Fisher.
