Original complete package of Civil War matches, as in museum and books (SOLD)

This is another nice item being offered, it is an original package of Civil War Matches. They are in heavy paper stock and when opened are loaded with stick matches. The overall size of the pack is 2 ½” x 1 ¼” x 7/8”. Original "Lucifers” were issued by the U.S. Government as well as being sold by the camp sutlers.

Although today we do not think much about it, but to the Civil War soldier in the field, it was an everyday necessity to have dry matches, for campfires, candles, tobacco, etc. In my recent book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I go into more detail about the importance of matches to the Civil War soldier and have one of these packages shown (see pictures). There is also an example in The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA (see pictures). Makes a great addition to a soldier’s personal effects.
