Original Civil War Union Bullseye Canteen, maker-marked (ON HOLD,DH)

Out of Stock

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Civil War U.S. Model 1858 Bullseye canteen. The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Some were made with smooth sides and others concentric rings for strengthening, this one having five rings.

It has the chain with cork stopper and originally it would have had a cloth sling for carrying. Probably the sling broke and someone replaced it with a piece of heavy bail wire – this could have been done after the war for display in a GAR Post.

The spout is marked ""HADDEN BOOTH & PORTER" PHILA ". Hadden Booth & Porter had contracts with the government throughout the war to supply canteens to the Union. In my recent book “The Civil War Canteen – Third Edition”, I show many bullseye canteens and discuss them in detail. This is an excellent example of an original Civil War Union canteen.
