Original Civil War tobacco package display, as in Gettysburg Museum

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is an original Civil War tobacco package set up for display. It is marked “MINNE – HA – HA! / EXCELSIOR / CAVENDISH / TOBACCO, / Manufactured by / H.L. Tickner & Co. / Anoka. / Minn.”. It started out as an original flat sheet measuring approximately 7 ¼ X 6 ½ inches. It is wrapped around a cellophane covered piece of clay to replace the tobacco.

In Time Life's “ECHOES OF GLORY ; Arms & Equipment of the Union”, there is an identical example of this tobacco (see pictures). Also, there is one displayed in Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum and Visitors Center (see pictures).

Although over 150 years old, the printing is still very visible, mainly because it was stored away without the tobacco, so it had no effect on the paper. It is done in such a way where the setup is not permanent, having removable glue dots and the interior covered in cellophane. The way it is now, it is perfect for display.
