Original Civil War maker-marked Pistol Cartridge Box

Product Description

This is another nice item being offered, it is an original leather Civil War pistol cartridge box, measuring 6" x 4 1/2". The outer flap shows very minor cracking to the finish, but it is still in very fine shape. There are three stampings on the flap: script “US” on lower left corner, the very faint maker’s name and “Newark, NJ” under the center rivet, and a clear rectangular inspector’s cartouche “T.J. Shepard” in lower right corner.

When the outer flap is opened there are two compartments, separated by leather pieces. The latch tab is complete and held in place with single row of stitching arched over a rivet. The interior of the box is very good. The back has both belt loops, which are stitched and riveted. Brass finial is present on bottom.

These boxes would be used by Cavalrymen, officers, and some Artillerymen. Overall, this is a very nice representation. There is some slight crazing as expected, but the stitching is fine. These boxes go great next to a Civil War revolver.
