Original Civil War Leather Percussion Cap Box, CS used (SOLD)

Out of Stock

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Civil War leather percussion cap box, which would have been carried by the soldier for his brass percussion caps for his musket. One of the original belt loops is still present. The outer flap of the box is marked with “NEWARK N.J.” – there was probably a name above it but has worn away. The original brass finial is also still present. Even though this is close to relic condition, it is a great display piece.

What is truly unique about this piece is that the outer flap has been reconnected by sewing a small piece of leather. I find it hard to believe that the Union would bother with such a repair – accoutrements such as this were plentiful. Most likely it was picked up on the battlefield to be reused by the Confederacy. Anyway, an interesting piece at a great price.  This is not a surplus box, but one that has been through the war.
