Original Civil War dug VMM plate, dug March 2012 at Seven Pines Battlefield with dig video (SOLD)

This is another great piece being offered, it is an excavated Civil War “VMM” belt plate, indicating Volunteer Maine Militia. It measures 40mm x 70mm and the reverse has a single arrow hook with a flat tongue. They were designed as a belt plate only - larger sizes had a lead-filled back and were used as cartridge box plates. (See period pic of soldier with VMM plate)

These plates were issued to Maine troops in a limited amount, but the problem was poor quality. Not embedded in lead, the arrow and tongue were prone to break off. This plate was in damaged condition when dug, but I had it professionally restored and it is now a beautiful display piece. It was dug at the Seven Pines, VA Battlefield in March 2012.

The digger stated that “The plate was down about 18 inches and the only reason I picked up a signal was because of a Union button which was in the same hole about 9 inches down”. The same hole produced three Union cuff buttons, two Minie balls and a percussion cap. I also have a video of the actual recovery of this plate.

There were 84,000 men involved in the May 31 – June 1, 1862 battle. The 3rd, 4th and 11th Maine saw action, no doubt this VMM plate belonged to one of them. These smaller size VMM plates are very rare, and this one is now in beautiful condition. I acquired this piece directly from the digger, shortly after the recovery. I will supply the digger’s name and video information to the new owner. Because of the restoration I have priced this plate accordingly. It comes in the glass top display case pictured.
