Original Civil War “Buck & Ball”, dug a few months ago at Murfreesboro (SOLD)

Out of Stock

Product Description

This is a unique item being offered, it is a Civil War Buck & Ball bullet. It has a .69 caliber ball with three pieces of buckshot. Using this cartridge would turn a smoothbore musket into a shotgun. In theory they were trying to make up for their lack of accuracy with firepower by throwing more pieces of lead at the enemy.

The effectiveness of buck and ball, however, was often marginal. To be effective soldiers had to get within 100 yards at most. At even closer ranges, such as around 50 yards, it could be devastating. It was found at Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 2021.

The Battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River) was fought from December 31, 1862, to January 2, 1863, in Middle Tennessee, as the culmination of the Stones River Campaign in the Western Theater. Of the major battles of the war, Murfreesboro had the highest percentage of casualties on both sides.

The example offered here is unique because it appears to have been recovered as one piece. With the majority of buck & balls, they are reassembled with a little glue. This would make a great addition to any collection.
