This is another nice piece out of the large Civil War collection I acquired - it is a Civil War Heart Saddle Buckle. It is made of brass and measures 1 1/2” long and 1 3/4” wide.
There is an example of this buckle in The Civil War Collector’s Encyclopedia, by Francis Lord (see pictures). He states that they are Confederate and come in two sizes, the one offered here would be the larger one. The examples he has were excavated in Virginia, Georgia, and Louisiana. There is also one pictured in "Horse Equipment of the Civil War", by Howard Crouch (see pictures), another is a dug example with leather (see pictures). This is a great piece having a beautiful untouched brass patina.
