Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Civil War CDV photograph of Lieutenant Alexander Gibb of the 148th Pennsylvania Volunteers. It is a full-standing view in his officer’s frock coat with his kepi resting on the chair beside him. The studio has a patriotic background with tents and cannons.

The backmark is “John Holyland, / Photographic Gallery, / No. 250 Pennsylvania Avenue, / Washington, D.C.”. Holyland was a famous photographer taking photographs of the thousands of soldiers passing through and stationed in Washington.

The 148th Pennsylvania participated in many battles and is one of “Fox’s Fighting 200”. They took heavy losses at both Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Gibb’s name can be found on the 148th plaque on the Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg (see pictures). At Gettysburg and Chancellorsville he was still a sergeant.

The photograph is very clear. The card has clipped corners for an album and there is a tiny spot missing on the top center. Images from the 148th Pennsylvania are always being sought out. It comes with his records from the Historical Data System and there is a picture of him as a civilian after the war.
