Museum quality complete U.S. Model 1858 Canteen with rare inspector marked sling

Product Description

This is another great piece being offered, it is a near mint, complete U.S. Model 1858 Smoothside Canteen, a product of the New York Army Depot. It has the brown wool cover, cork stopper with chain, and a complete linen strap. The body of the canteen is strong but as with most soldier carried canteens; it has a slight depression under the cover which is from the soldier’s hip.

The linen carrying sling is original to the piece and in excellent condition. Sling is stenciled in black ink with the inspector mark “T. F. Bayles, / US Inspector / New York”. Bayles inspected canteens from January 1864 until around May 1865.

The original owner of this canteen acquired it in 1987 at Ellicott City, Maryland. As with most of his collection, he attached a typed tag to the canteen. My understanding is that he lived in Virginia and acquired a huge Civil War collection, mostly by going to Estate sales in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

I have hundreds of canteens in my collection and have three published books on Civil War canteens, the latest “Civil War Canteens – Third Edition”. This example is the nicest I have ever come across. The Bayles marked canteens are very rare and desirable. The last two that I came across were sold for over $800.00 each and did not compare to the quality of this one.

Anyone ever wanting a museum quality Union canteen, this would be the one. I seriously doubt you could find a better one, especially with the rare inspector marking.
