Product Description

This is a very unique piece being offered, it is a religious pendant that was dug by Dennis Irvin. It measures ½” x ¾” and weighs only 0.011 grams. The material used to construct this thin pendant is unknown.

These medals were known as “Miraculous Medals”. The design was originated by Saint Catherine Laboure following her reported vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Many Catholic soldiers believed that wearing the medal with faith and devotion would bring special graces through the intercession of Mary at their hour of death. Although worn, the date at the bottom is 1830.

This delicate little religious pendant is from the collection of the late Dennis Irvin, of Fauquier County, Virginia, who recovered it at the Brandy Station, Virginia Battlefield. In my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I have one of these medals shown (see pictures). In "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch, there are other examples of this medal shown (see pictures). This is a great personal item.
