Product Description

This is another nice grouping being offered, it is a display case of relics which were recovered in Union camps along the Patapsco River, Maryland – near Elkridge and Relay. There is a brass buckle, a brass flat button, remains of a brass scabbard tip, brass grommet and fired bullet.

The B&O Railroad was the only railroad into Washington DC until after the Civil War, thus it was an essential supply train route for the Union during that time. To prevent Confederate attacks or sabotage of the bridges and the railroad, the Eighth New York and the Sixth Massachusetts regiments as well as Cook's Boston Artillery Battery took control of the area in early 1861. The Relay House itself became the occupying Union Army headquarters (see period photo).

In 1861 General Butler and his troops encamped near the Relay House and Elkridge, along the Patapsco River, Maryland. It is situated in a deep valley, through which the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad runs and from which the hills on either side slope gradually to a height commanding a fullview of the surrounding country. The Eighth New York Infantry was the first to arrive in the area, followed by the Sixth Massachusetts Infantry.

The Patapsco Guards, Independent Company of Infantry, Maryland Volunteers, was organized during the summer of 1861. Until it was disbanded in 1864, the Patapsco Guards performed provost and guard duty at the B&O Railroad Station and the areas around Elkridge and Relay. It also fought Confederates during the Gettysburg campaign at Wrightsville, Pa., in 1863, and during the raids near Chambersburg, Pennsylvania in 1864.

These artifacts were recovered by a local digger who worked this area for over 25 years and recently passed away. This is a nice collection of miscellaneous camp artifacts and comes in the glass top display case pictured.
