Flying Eagle Cent, dated 1857

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is an 1857 Flying Eagle Cent. This coin brought an end to the large size cents. Actually, the limited number of Flying Eagle pennies that were made in 1856 served as patterns and weren’t authorized as an official U.S. Mint issue. As the first issue of small cents for circulation, the 1857 Flying Eagle Cents were coined in larger numbers for the time period.

It portrays a Flying Eagle on one side and the reverse features the words “ONE CENT” inside a wreath around the perimeter of the coin. When the Civil War broke out, most soldiers had several of these coins in their pocket. They are often recovered at Civil War sites. It is well circulated, but the details and date still stand out.
