Product Description

Original 1863 Continental Monthly. It measures 6” x 9 ½” x ¼” and on the front cover is “The Continental Monthly / Devoted to Literature and National Policy. / November, 1863”. This one is Number 23, and was issued the same month that President Lincoln traveled to Gettysburg to give the famous Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the National Cemetery.

The Continental Monthly was a magazine devoted to literature and national policy, published in the North during much of the American Civil War. The Continental Monthly began publication with the January 1862 issue. It ceased publication with the December 1864 issue. The back covers of this magazine and the last few pages have some very interesting advertisements. The Illinois Central Railroad was offering farm land in “ILLINOIS, the Garden State of America”, from $8 to $12 per acre. It lists the products which were suitable for farming….one of them being cotton. It states “A settler having a family of young children can turn their youthful labor to a most profitable account in the growth and perfection of this plant”. Another ad is for Artificial Limbs, featuring “…Hands and Arms of superior excellence for mutilations and congenital defects” and “…U.S. Army furnishes limbs to mutilated Soldiers and Marines”. There is also an interesting editorial which touches on the ongoing war, slavery, and the recent battle at Gettysburg.

This magazine remains in very nice condition, tight and complete…only very minor wear. Surviving examples of these magazines are extremely rare, and they are seldom offered on the open market. This one has been in my private collection for many years. It would make a great addition to a display of a soldiers personal effects.
