Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Virginia One Dollar Virginia Treasury Note. It is the Series A dated July 21, 1862, printed by Hoyer & Ludwig, Richmond, Virginia. The note depicts John Lechter, Virginia Governor, at left, Ceres seated with basket (center) and steamship in background at right.

It was printed in black with a red overlay of "ONE" and the numeral "1" shown twice, all on plain paper. The note is hand numbered and signed in black ink. Printed on the note is: "VIRGINIA TREASURY NOTE / The Commonwealth of Virginia will pay ONE DOLLAR to bearer on demand at the Treasury. / RICHMOND / July 21 1862". The back of the note is blank, and it measures 2 7/8” x 6 7/8”.

As with most Confederate currency, it was well circulated, so the paper is soft with folds and wear along the edges, however it comes in a sturdy clear display sleeve for preservation and display. At one time it was probably tucked in the pocket of a Confederate soldier. It will be an excellent addition to any Civil War collection.
