Confederate Artillery Fuse Adapter from Gettysburg

$75.00

Product Description

This is another piece from the large Civil War collection I am working on, it is an excavated Confederate copper time fuse adaptor, used in cylindrical artillery projectiles. This adaptor is constructed of copper which now has a dusty green patina. The two spanner holes visible on the top of the adaptor were used to screw it into the shell. It was originally out of an old Gettysburg collection. It has a diameter of approximately 1 ¼” and stands 1 ¾” high.

A paper time fuse of varying burn times would be inserted into the center hole to determine the explosion of the shell. This is the pattern you so often see in Confederate Read shells. I have artillery fuses pictured in my book “Civil War Artillery – A Pictorial Introduction” (see pictures).

This fuze adaptor has no cracks, breaks, or repairs and still has some dirt in the threads. It has a wonderful greenish patina. Actually, it would probably still screw into a shell if cleaned up a little. It would be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or Gettysburg collection.
