Product Description

This is a very interesting Confederate document being offered, it is the receipts for payment to the state of Alabama to support the Confederacy. It is actually two receipts for the same person, identical but not separated. It is filled in with period ink and measures 9” x 4 ¾”. The back is blank but being thin paper you can see how the ink bled through.

The top one is for “J.R. Butler” for $50.00 for the present year ending April 24, 1863 and dated Nov. 21, 1863. It is signed “S.J. Howard, Collector for the 31st District”.

The bottom one is also Butler’s for the amount of $11.25. It states, “the amount of the Confederate tax payable by him for the present year ending Oct 1, 1863”. Also dated Nov 21, 1863.

Paying a total sum of $61.25 (added at top of document) no doubt would have been a real hardship for just about anyone in the South in 1863. This is a unique Confederate document and I would imagine very few of these survived.
