Confederate 12-pounder Confederate Shell, dug at Blakeley Alabama Battlefield (ON HOLD)

Out of Stock

Product Description

This is a great Confederate artillery shell being offered. It is a cannonball fired from a 4.62-inch cannon barrel. These shells were known as 12- pounders. This one was designed to hold the paper time fuse in the center hole. These paper time fuzes burned down like a candle wick and then caused the explosion to break apart the cannonball. This ball was recovered from the Fort Blakeley, Alabama Battlefield.

After the Atlanta and Georgia Campaigns of late 1864, Union commanders looked to wipe out remaining Confederate forces in the deep south, including those defending Mobile, Alabama. During the last week of March 1865, the Union XVI and XIII corps under Maj. Gen. Edward R. S. Canby moved north along the eastern shore of Mobile Bay toward Confederate defenders at Spanish Fort, arriving there March 27.

Brig. Gen. St. John R. Liddell, with about 3,000 men supported by gunboats, held out against the much larger Union force until Spanish Fort fell on April 8, allowing Canby to concentrate 16,000 men for the attack on nearby Fort Blakeley the next day (see map). After a brief fight, Union troops breached the Confederate earthworks compelling the defenders to surrender. The capture of Fort Blakeley was the last combined-force battle of the war, fought the same day Robert E. Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox.

This cannonball is in dug condition with just the typical surface ground pitting, but no flaking. The number "52" is an old inventory number. It has been lightly coated for preservation and is now ready for display. In my book “Civil War Artillery – A Pictorial Introduction”, I go into more detail about these shells and the guns that fired them.
