Civil War Soldier’s Shaving Set, as in museums and books (SOLD)

Out of Stock

$145.00

Product Description

These are some nice pieces being offered, there is a tin shaving cup, a period toothbrush without any bristles, and a straight razor. The cup stands 4 1/2" high with a diameter of 3” (not counting handle or side compartment). It has a rolled lip and a flat bottom, along with all of the seams being soldered, as correct for the Civil War period. It also has the attached side compartment for the razor and soap. The razor is marked “ALLENTOWN”, which was established in 1862.

There are similar examples of this shaving cup in The Civil War Collectors Encyclopedia, by Francis Lord. You will see these items in just about all of the Civil War museums (see pictures). In my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I show an identified set to a soldier in the 61st New York Infantry (see pictures)

The overall condition of the grouping is very nice, the tin cup has some slight surface rust, but a very solid piece. The razor has a chip out of it, but it does not distract from the overall appearance of the grouping. It would go great with a display of a soldier's personal effects or in a camp display.
