Civil War Soldier's Leather covered Bible, dated 1845 (ON HOLD,M)

Out of Stock

Product Description

This is another nice item being offered, it is a Civil War soldier’s Pocket Bible measuring 4 ½” x 3 x 1 ¼”. This size was small enough for a soldier or officer to carry it in his knapsack, coat pocket, or haversack. (There are actually examples of these bibles which stopped bullets in battle). It has the popular mid-19th century red Moroccan leather cover with closing tongue.

The title page reads “The English Version of the Polyglott Bible: containing the Old and New Testaments, with the marginal readings ….”. At the bottom of the page is “Springfield / Published by G. & C. Merriam / 1845”.

Bibles were distributed to Union and Confederate soldiers by the Christian Commission and many other religious organizations. Due to the demand for bibles, many were donated by local families. However, many soldiers brought their own bibles with them when they went off to war.

The bible is complete but shows signs of extended use, however, it is still a solid example. In my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I show similar examples and go into more detail about the importance of religion to the Civil War soldier (see pictures). Also, in “Fighting Men of the Civil War”, there are very similar bibles (see pictures). It would go great in a display of a soldiers personal effects.
