Civil War Pocket "Spy Glass", telescope (SOLD)

Out of Stock

Product Description

This is another nice item piece from the large Civil War collection which I acquired; it is a small Civil War “Spy Glass” telescope. It is made of brass and has three draws, measuring 8” when completely opened. The diameter is 1” and it is void of any markings, which is correct for the era.

Telescopes such as these were an important tool of the artillery, Cavalry and Field officers. Being a smaller size, it would be considered a pocket spy glass, ideal for carrying in a haversack or coat pocket. In “Civil War Artifacts”, by Howard Crouch, there is a similar example that was excavated in Fredericksburg (see pictures).

Everything seems to be intact (i.e. lenses), but it is kind of dirty and could be cleaned. No doubt this telescope was used, but overall a solid piece and excellent for display.
