Civil War Officer’s "H A" Heavy Artillery Hat Insignia

$125.00

Product Description

This is another great example of Civil War hat insignia. There is a brass “H” and a brass “A”, measuring approximately ¾” each. They are not the typical and common flat brass, but the quality and more expensive officer’s brass. Sometimes this design is referred to as “Zouave Insignia”. Years ago, they were removed from an officer’s kepi which was falling apart and was a member of a Heavy Artillery Unit.

During the Civil War, artillery was classified as heavy or light depending on the maneuverability and size of the guns. Light or field artillery pieces were moved by small teams of horses and were used by armies in the field for both offensive and defensive operations. Heavy artillery was used primarily in fixed fortifications for defending cities or in siege operations against such forts.

These insignias are non-dug and have a beautiful, aged patina to the brass. The complete attachment wires are still present on the back. It is very difficult to find quality pieces as the ones offered here. They come in the glass top display case pictured.
