This is another interesting piece being offered, it is a Civil War era mustard jar. It measures 4 ½” high with a diameter of 2” and appears to have a faint “K” on the base. It was found years ago in a campsite in Virginia.
An example of this jar was recovered from the Civil War ship SS Republic. The SS Republic was a Civil War-era sidewheel steamship that sank in 1865 while carrying a large cargo of silver and gold coins and a variety of everyday wares essential to life in mid-19th century America (see pictures).
The bottle is stained and oxidized quite a bit, but there are no cracks (probably could be cleaned better). In “The Collector’s Guide to Civil War Period Bottles and Jars”, by Mike Russell, there is an example of this jar (see pictures).
