Civil War leather Percussion Cap Box, ex – Rochester Historical Society Museum

$250.00

Product Description

This is another great piece being offered, it is a Civil War soldier’s Percussion Cap Box. They held the percussion caps needed to fire their muskets. On the inside flap is the maker’s mark “JEWELL / MAKER / HARTFORD”, and out the outer flap is “U.S”. Their original inventory tag still remains on the box “3153 / R.H.S.”.

This cap box is one of the Civil War items from the Rochester Historical Society Museum that has been deacessed recently from their collection, I had two, the first one has already sold.

The Society is Rochester’s oldest cultural institution, founded over 160 years ago (see pictures). To cover expenses, they periodically sell off some of their large collection, especially duplicate pieces. This has also become necessary because they had moved to a location which has substantially less storage space.

The cap box is in beautiful condition, complete and undamaged, and the leather still pliable. The maker Jewell had early government contracts for these cap boxes in 1861 and 1862. It is not a surplus piece, but one that has definitely been through the war, but not abused. The Rochester area provided countless men to fight for the Union during the war. Many veterans, or their families, would donate items to the Society such as this to preserve them and keep them local. This cap box is about as nice as they come, if you want a quality piece, or want to upgrade, this is the one.
