Civil War Folding Camp Armchair, as seen with General Grant and General Meade

$225.00

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Civil War soldier’s folding camp chair, this one usually referred to as a “Grant” chair, because of the famous photograph (see pictures). The wooden armchair has a carpet seat and when opened, measures approximately 30 inches high and 20 inches wide. The chair folds up nicely to about 19” x 30” x 8”, this is what made it ideal to be used in camp.

These camp chairs are often seen in period Civil War photographs of camp scenes. The most popular are General U.S. Grant standing next to one and General George G. Meade, also standing next to one (see pictures).

All the wood is tight and solid, no visible repairs and it is the only one I had with arms in the past 20+ years. The examples without the arms are somewhat common. The carpet seat was probably replaced at one time, which is common in just about all of these chairs. Although the seat is tight, I wouldn't try sitting on it and use it only for display. It would look great in a Civil War soldier’s camp display.
