Civil War era Crucifix, as in the Gettysburg NPS Museum (SOLD,M)

This is another nice item being offered, it is a Civil War era Crucifix. It is made of brass and wood and measures approximately 3 3/4” x 1 1/2" and having the skull and crossbones on the bottom – typical of the early to mid-19th century (no markings). During the Civil War, many soldiers were religious, especially the Irish, and were known to carry these types of articles.

In the old Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum, a crucifix such as this one was found in the McPherson's barn (see pictures). The barn was used as a hospital during and after the battle. There is another excavated example in "Civil War Relics of the Western Campaigns", by Charles Harris (see pictures).

There are the typical signs of extended use but overall, it is in very nice condition - having a beautiful untouched patina.
