Brass section from a Civil War Shoulder Scale, dug at Gettysburg

Product Description

This is another interesting piece being offered, it is a section of a Civil War soldier’s Shoulder Scale. It is made of brass and measures 5 1/2” x 2”. This is the attachment piece which connected the scale to the soldier’s uniform. This piece and several others were recovered years ago from the Gettysburg Battlefield.

Typically, these shoulder scales would be worn by cavalrymen and artillerymen (see pictures). It was thought that these scales would protect the soldier from saber blows but rarely if ever did this occur. Not serving any real purpose, most soldiers simply discarded them. A neat and original, inexpensive Gettysburg piece.
