Product Description

This is another nice item being offered, it is a late 19th century Stereocard on Antietam. It is the typical size of 7” x 3 ½” and was published by William H. Rau of Philadelphia and sold by Griffith and Griffith. It is titled “Battle of Antietam, Sept., 16 [17], 1862” and “Copyrighted 1887, by L. Prang & Co., Boston”.

Louis Prang (March 12, 1824 – September 14, 1909) was an American printer, lithographer and publisher. He is sometimes known as the "father of the American Christmas card”. In June 1886 Prang published a series of prints under the title Prang's War Pictures: Aquarelle Facsimile Prints. These became popular and helped inspire a genre of such prints, particularly the series issued by Kurz and Allison. However, Prang aimed at a more modern and individual treatment, as opposed to the panoramic style of Kurz and Allison, and before them, Currier and Ives.

The battle scene is a little light, which was typical of these cards, but overall it is in very nice condition, especially for an early card. The reverse of the card is blank.
