Original Civil War era cigar. It measures 4” long and was found in a cigar box dated 1861, along with four others (see pictures of box). Most every soldier used tobacco products of some kind. Cigars were probably the most popular but not always easy to get, especially when money was scarce or when there was no camp sutler. Grant was only one of many inveterate cigar smokers. Soldiers were always willing to share just about anything, but tobacco was an item they were selfish about. There are similar examples of these Civil War cigars in The Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum and in The Civil War Collectors Encyclopedia, by Francis Lord. Although dry, this cigar is still stable and comes in a glass top display case with small pictures of the original box. (ON HOLD)
