Original Civil War CDV of General Christopher C. Augur. Click photo and "Detailed Description". Currently not available, being photographed for new artillery book.
Civil War CDV of General Christopher C. Augur. The corners of the card are trimmed for insertion into an album, which was a common practice of the period. There is no backmark. This is an early view of Augur and one which I never seen, probably 1862. In most images of General Augur, he is older looking....probably late war or post-war. Obviously the war aged him, as it did to many of the men. General Augur was born in New York in 1821, and in 1843 graduated from West Point. In the Mexican War, he served as First as Aide-de-Camp to General Hopping. In 1852 he was promoted to captain and served with distinction in the war against the Indians of Oregon. On May 11, 1861, he was appointed major in the 13th Infantry and then for a time, Commandant of Cadets at West Point. In November of that year he was commissioned Brigadier-general of Volunteers, being assigned to General McDowell's Corps. In July, 1862, he was assigned to a division under Gen. Banks and was severely wounded in the Battle of Cedar Mountain. On Aug. 9, 1862, he was promoted Major-general of Volunteers and joining his command in the following November, taking part in the Louisiana campaign. At the Battle of Port Hudson, he commanded the left wing of the army. He was Commandant of the Department of Washington from Oct. 13, 1863 to Aug 13, 1866, afterwards being commandant successively of the Departments of the Platte, Texas, the Gulf, the South, and the Missouri. He retired from the Army in 1885, died in Washington, DC on January 16th, 1898 and is buried in Arlington Cemetery. Also of interest is the fact that he was officer in charge of the escort of President Lincoln’s body from the Peterson House to the White House after the President’s assassination on the evening of April 14, 1865. A rare and desirable image. Currently not available, being photographed for new artillery book.
