Civil War Shield

Civil War shield,it measures 1 1/2" x 1 1/8". Across the top is "1862", this appears to be stamped in, in an offset manner. It is a little faint and worn, but it is definitely there. It is a porous metal, possibly lead, although I am not positive. On the reverse is two studs, which would have been used for attachment. I acquired this item directly from the digger, who wasn't sure of its use. It could be off of a Cavalry harness. There are similar shields in the relic books by Crouch and Phillips, sometimes used as Corps badges. (ON HOLD,B READY)
