Original CDV image of Congressman Constantine C. Esty. Appointed first Tax Assesor by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. Click photo and "Detailed Description".
The image of Esty is very sharp and clear and on the reverse is the photographers backmark "MARSHALL., / Photographer, 145 Tremont Street, / Boston".
Esty was born in Framingham, Massachusetts and graduated from Yale College in 1845 where he was a member of the Skull and Bones. He studied law and was admitted to the bar and practiced in Framingham in 1847. He served in the State Senate in 1857 and 1858 and was a member of the State House of Representatives in 1867. His major achievement though was when he was appointed assessor of the Internal Revenue by President Lincoln in 1862 and served throughout the Civil War until he was removed for political reasons by President Johnson in 1866, but reappointed by him in 1867. He resigned in 1872. He continued the practice of his profession in Framingham until his death on December 27, 1912. This rare image would make a great addition to a Lincoln collection.
