Artillery Harness Chain. Click photo and "Detailed Description".
This is another nice piece being offered from my private collection; it is a 31” section of chain from a Civil War Artillery Harness. One end still has about six inches remaining of the leather strap. I have an almost identical piece that I have included in the new artillery book I am working on. These harnesses were designed so that when a horse is killed, the harness could be quickly removed. This was necessary because it would have to be used again for the next replacement horse being brought up to the front. Speed was imperative to save the gun from being captured if it couldn’t be separated from the horses.
