Full-Case Ambrotype of young woman in Patriotic Case. Click photo and "Detailed Description".
This is a full case 1/6 plate ambrotype of a young woman. It is in a Patriotic Case having an Eagle on the Shield, embossed on both sides of the case with both hooks still present. The girl is seated, dressed in black and has a brooch on her collar and is also wearing earrings. The overall size of the case is 3 1/4" x 3 3/4".
Ambrotypes were basically a thin or light collodion negative on a glass plate. When backed with black varnish, the negative turns into a positive photograph. Consequently, each ambrotype is unique since it is the actual plate that was exposed to light in the camera.
This image has been in my collection for many years and was always a favorite of mine. The girl is looking directly into the camera and has kind of a sad look. Perhaps being that she is dressed in black, she may have been in mourning over the passing of a loved one. Being in a patriotic case, maybe that loved one was a soldier. The photograph is very clear with no damage and the case is also in excellent condition.
